Open letter to DfES

Page history last edited by starkfamily1@... 17 years, 3 months ago

Please feel free to alter this letter - this is just a very basic, rough idea that I hope we will refine. (This letter has now been posted to DfEs and released to the press.) Feel free to use this letter to write to your own MP or newspapers promoting the right of families to choose and asking for the DfEs to drop their consultation on how to interfere more efficiently into the lives and education of our children.

Dear Sir/Madam

We read with interest today the Prime Minister's comments reaffirming all parents' absolute right to "make choices about their children's education which are best suited to their children's needs irrespective of who their parents are or what job they do".

As home educators, we agree with the Prime Minister on this. Indeed, we have been making this point for decades.

In the light of such unequivocal support from the Prime Minister, we suggest and expect that the proposed consultation on monitoring of elective home education will be scrapped. The money saved should be spent getting all Local Authorities to act within the perfectly adequate laws that already exist and in making it known that home education is as valid an option as school for ALL parents and children, "regardless of who they are or what job they do".

Quote and Source:

"Secondly, the Prime Minister supported absolutely the right of parents to make choices about their children's education which are best suited to those children's needs, irrespective of who their parents were and what job they did."

Great letter, Tech. Makes a great point very quickly. Is it possible to put the date of the letter and the source of the quotation somewhere in or near the text...(selfish reasons: I want to look it up!)

I made some minor changes to the text. Hope you think they are OK

Hi Carlotta, the source of the quote is via the link at the bottom - direct from No 10! Will Date it now.

I did some minor copy-editing (including extra apostrophes on the quote from No 10 - need a bit of education there, then! Suggest that we send it to the people who sent the email about light touch monitoring (I can look it up in my email if you don't have it saved). And let's all send it to our MPs?

great idea Shena. My grammar isn't great but even I picked it up and had a litle chuckle to myself at the extra apostrophes!

Nice letter - succinct and finely targetted. Has it gone off yet? And will it go with the AHEd logo - which I think would be a good idea, get our name out there and all that.
